DRAW YOUR FAMILY
Materials
Paper, pens/pencils/paint (other collage materials such as fabric, coloured paper, scissors â optional).
Process
Ask the child (or parent/carer) to draw his family, including himself, doing something together. Some children might need a little prompting to think of a scenario to draw. You might suggest depicting a day out, a teatime or a special celebration. Encourage the child to draw his picture any way he likes and to include whomever he feels to be part of the family. Pets often feature here, as might neighbours or family friends.
Explore the image with the child, asking who the figures are and what they are doing. It might then be possible to discuss the childâs feelings about family members and his perceptions of relationships between people. You might encourage individuals on the picture to âtalk to each otherâ or you could add speech bubbles. Above all, show interest and curiosity to learn more about the child and his family.
It is interesting to see who the child puts on his picture and who is excluded. When doing this activity with a child in care, notice whether he draws only his birth family or whether the foster family is also present. Is the family doing something together or are members more isolated? Who is drawn close to whom? And do the childâs descriptions of people fit with their representations on the paper? (Wrench and Naylor 2013).
